Wednesday Words of Wisdom

This week’s words of wisdom come from Kim Austin in Student Affairs at the Terry Campus:

I found a teaching principle that I support based on the research of Chickering and Gamson highlighted in American Association of Higher Education. The principle is that “good teaching practice encourages active learning techniques”. In First Year Seminar, students practice online registration, navigate the portal and website to locate resources, and discuss real life experiences related to topics like time management and study skills. Students cannot simply sit and listen to instruction and expect to fully grasp and master the content without practical engagement. Having them make the connection with their specific needs makes the material relevant and easier to retain.

Thanks Kim!
