Great Expectations: Unspoken Implications

Presented by Bonnie Ceban
Session Type: Conversation

Consider how college classrooms are represented in film and television. Can you picture the boring lectures, large class sizes, and intimidating professors? Students carry these same mental images with them into their first semester, often increasing their anxiety and influencing how they perceive instruction. According to Rebecca Cox, author of The College Fear Factor: How Students and Professors Misunderstand One Another, unspoken expectations and miscommunication surrounding how learning will take place in the classroom can create a significant divide between first year students and their instructors. Join me to discuss practical solutions to bridging the divide between student perceptions and instructor expectations as we seek to overcome the ‘College Fear Factor.’
